You can take your time and make great decisions, but you can’t take your time and take enough time to do it right.
And that’s why I’m constantly looking for reasons as to why I’m not getting it right, and why I’m so bad at it.
There are two reasons I can give you for why I’m not getting it right: (1) I’m a lazy bastard and (2) I procrastinate so much that its driving me crazy. But I think the main reason you’re not getting it is because it’s easy to make mistakes when you’re just trying to do something and have nothing to lose.
In a nutshell, our game is like the movie “The Princess Bride,” except the princess is a time traveler and the main character is a time lord. Colt is a time lover who decides to go on the adventure with the princess and their friend (who happens to be the future of the island) and save the day on a quest to destroy the Visionaries. He spends time toying with time lord and his minions before heading out to find the Visionaries.
It’s almost like we’re stuck in a time loop ourselves, watching main character Colt fight the visionaries for so long. They probably think our game is a perfect time-lapse movie because Colt has a better sense of time than other characters, but the real thing is he’s not just trying to kill time lords, he’s trying to kill time lord. And I just can’t help but be disappointed.
I’m hoping Deathloop’s story trailer has a few more surprises, as well as a few more questions to answer for us, too. This is the kind of game I want from Arkane I can expect great things from these guys.
The final game trailer, which is written by my old friend Jeff and shot in a similar color palette, was released last year and is one of my favorite trailers out there.
The game itself is one of the more ambitious attempts to revive the days of the time-looping stealth game, which was, in my opinion, the greatest strategy game ever released. Its biggest flaw was that it came out too late in the game loop — the design team just couldn’t wait to release the game.
There are a lot of things that I will do differently next time, but that’s the point of any new game. You can’t just be like, “Oh, we’re going to go back to the time-looping game,” and do it, and then be like, “Oh, that doesn’t work anymore.” Because then you’re just setting yourself up for failure. You need to do more than that.
